The deeper war on consciousness between the Generations boomer and Gen Z
Very interesting timing of the release of the movie before the 2024 election. Spoilers included.
Just watching the movie about late stage capitalism and the existential rise of the fear of the self. It incorporates the cult of personality mixed with demagogue worship and the irrational animalistic mind.
Its interesting dream wise as it shows people returning to base instincts when the anonymity of the internet seems to be birthing the fear. Suggesting the internet of things has taken over our Bi-cameral mind and subverting the limbic regions into microcosm of fascist herd mentality.
Its not the greatest movie. would have been better if written by Charlie Kaufman. But it has its movie references to xistenz (stylized as eXistenZ) is a 1999 science fiction horror film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg. Heathers is a 1988 American teen black comedy film written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann. And the obvious updated version of Adaptation; A 2002 American meta comedy-drama film directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. ensemble cast led by Nicolas Cage
To extrapolate the deeper subtext themes:
The only think I can spin from it is that the Biden/Netanyahu hatred is subtle yet pointed out in a subconscious use of the horror genre, portraying the main Character in everyones dreams as a useless aged redundant father figure that becomes the horro figure.
The obvious references to Freddy Kruger, Timothy Leary drug use and or sexual fantasy between Boomer and Gen-z, is cleverly used as main signifier of a Generation inheriting a world run entirely by images, slowly showing up as brutality.
But at its base it shows the collective vanity of overly self identified human nature through technologies mass consumption. The constant comparison from the main Character is that we are zebras herd animals, or Lead stand out peacock to get more chance at sexual reproduction.
Which is a very simplified centric view of the world as different herds, easily manipulated around social standing into fears and wants. The hierarchical morality and civil society expectations are vague but only poorly represented in some strange new product rip off from Cronenburg.
In closing Cage holds the cast and story together while it portrays Gen Z as a bunch of useless kids that will do nothing but dream and not do anything practical in the future other than shape perceptions to sell products that do essentially nothing... i.e talk talk talk talk and do nothing... sell lifestyles and looks blah blah blah.... essentially cliches and tropes.
So yeh The boomer professor father figure Vs the Gen z tech split from tradition in one movie. Just before an election year. Sad they didn't get Taylor Swift to do a cameo it would have become an instant trope/meme for the Biden Trump whatever election circus 2024 will be.
